Going to Neo-Soul night at the Jazz Cafe early last week has really re-ignited the spark for the genre, similar to the first time discovered Neo-soul as a young 13 year old. Listening to ‘On & On’ by Erykah Badu on repeat, I cultivated a love for lyricism and spoken truths, different from the hum of surface level mainstream tunes, neo-soul gives you food for thought and space for the mind to wonder. Not to mention the music always so smooth and silky from the voices of D’angelo, Dwele and Maxwell to Goaple and Floetry. The old school classics of Neo-soul are timeless sounds that continue to manifest in new artists like H.E.R and Masego.

On & on- Erykah badu
Peace and blessings manifest with every lesson learned
If your knowledge were your wealth, then it would be well-earned
If we were made in his image, then call us by our names
Most intellects do not believe in God but they fear us just the same
Cruisin’ – D’angelo
I love it when we’re cruisin’ together
Music was made for love
Cruisin’ is made for love
Closer – goapele
Closer to my dreams
Feel it all over my being, in my being
Close your eyes and seek what you believe
Just friends – Musiq soulchild
Just can’t stop thinkin’ ’bout you
You ain’t even really gotta be my girlfriend
I just wanna know your name and maybe some time
We can hook up, hang out, just chill
